Macron Reaffirms Support for Iraq’s Stability in Call with Incoming Leader
(MENAFN) France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, held a phone conversation on Sunday with Iraq’s prime minister-designate, Ali Al-Zaidi, emphasizing the importance of Iraq’s sovereignty and stability for broader regional security.
According to reports, Macron congratulated Al-Zaidi on being tasked with forming the next Iraqi government and expressed confidence in his leadership during a critical period for the country.
"I spoke with Ali Zaidi, the Prime Minister tasked with forming the next Iraqi government. I congratulated him on his appointment and extended my best wishes for success in this decisive mission for Iraq’s future, in a particularly demanding regional context," Macron wrote on US social media platform X.
As stated by general accounts, the French president also highlighted the need for a prompt conclusion to the investigation into a March attack in Makhmour that resulted in the death of a French soldier and injuries to several others.
Macron underscored that Iraq’s independence and internal stability play a crucial role not only in Middle Eastern affairs but also in European security.
"A stable, sovereign Iraq that is fully in control of its destiny is essential for the security of both the Middle East and Europe. France will continue to stand alongside the Iraqi people to help achieve this and to further deepen our strategic partnership across all areas," Macron added.
